The Australia China Youth Association at The University of Queensland is helping students to thrive in the “Asian Century”.
The student society aims to build an extensive network of students and young professionals in Australia and China, while fostering professional, social and cultural connections between members.
Australian China Youth Association (ACYA) President and UQ student Jimmy Zeng said the society helped students broaden their professional development, exchange ideas and become innovative, culturally-competent leaders.
“The society is based on three pillars: careers, education and people-to-people exchange,” Mr Zeng said.
“We bring together students, professionals and academics with a strong interest in the Australia-China relationship, and find opportunities to contribute to local community.”
The society is preparing for its annual ball supported by the Office of Undergraduate Education.
“The ACYA Ball is a formal networking, dinner and drinks event which aims to bring together students, staff and professionals to exchange ideas, partake in cultural and musical performances and learn about the society’s vision for the future,” Mr Zeng said.
He said being a student leader had increased his adaptability and opened up opportunities he never imagined, such as meeting important people in the corporate and government sectors.
“Participation in ACYA has improved my personal and professional development by leaps and bounds,” he said.
“By volunteering my time while studying I have developed transferable skills in leadership and management and learned useful time-management techniques.
“I've also discovered new strengths, refined my communication skills and learned to adapt to changing situations.”
He encourages other students to get involved with causes that matter to them and be open to opportunities that arise.
“Don't hesitate to join an organisation that is doing something meaningful to you personally,” Mr Zeng said.
“Go the extra mile to offer a helping hand and step up for things that need to get done - go at it 110 per cent.”
The annual ball will be help on Saturday, 21 September 2013 at the Marriot Suites, Brisbane.
