An aspiring young exercise physiologist and global entrepreneur is one of five undergraduate UQ students bound for Mexico for an international summer school to foster economic growth.

Human Movement Studies student Kamil Wegrecki will represent The University of Queensland Faculty of Health Sciences at the 2012 Universitas 21 Summer School in Mexico.

Only five undergraduate students from The University of Queensland have received a scholarship to attend this prestigious event, which will be attended by about 70 students worldwide.

Mr Wegrecki will travel to Mexico in July and spend 10 days taking part in the summer school, which brings together students engaged in entrepreneurial activities around the world to foster economic growth and social development in their communities.

“My interest in applying for this scholarship was sparked by the countless benefits that I would gain from my participation, especially as a future exercise physiologist and aspiring educator,” said Mr Wegrecki.

“The advent of the recent rapid growth of exercise physiology as an allied health profession illustrates how new facets of healthcare are emerging and the importance of entrepreneurship is in turn becoming increasingly evident.

“This opportunity will help me develop as an aspiring global entrepreneur who can bring this field to greater prominence in a future where it is so manifestly lacking,” he said.

The theme of this year’s Summer School is Shaping the Global Future Entrepreneur: small and medium size enterprises (SMEs).

The event will be hosted by U21 member university Tecnologico de Monterrey in Queretaro, Mexico.

U21 Summer School Scholarships are awarded to students based on academic merit, a 300-word abstract, and applicants’ responses to questions about their motivation to participate and how the activity will benefit their academic and professional development.

Also from UQ are Wayne Wei Chan (commerce), Michael Twycross (engineering), Oriana Pauli (integrated resource management) and Esther Manning (Integrated Hotel Management and Tourism).
