The first in a monthly series of free, easy-to-understand public lectures covering a wide variety of science topics will be launched in Brisbane on Monday March 13.

Sponsored by The University of Queensland, the BrisScience lectures will feature dynamic speakers who work at the leading edge of science and technology.

The first talk, The Secrets of Our Genes, will be given by Federation Fellow Professor John Mattick, an internationally recognised DNA expert from UQ’s Institute for Molecular BioScience.

The one-hour lecture will take place in the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts, Fortitude Valley at 6.30pm (doors open at 6pm).

BrisScience director Dr Jennifer Dodd said the aim of the lecture series was to bring important and topical aspects of science to the general public in an easy and accessible way.

“I plan to make BrisScience an opportunity for anybody interested in science, technology, and its role in society to engage with some of the people who work with these ideas on a daily basis.

“The lectures will be given by prominent scientists and science communicators, including several researchers from UQ, and be accessible to people without any background in science.”

Dr Dodd said she was delighted that The University of Queensland had recognised the importance of the project and had funded the lecture series.

She said bookings were not required and complimentary wine, soft drinks and nibbles would be served after each lecture to provide an opportunity for informal discussions with the speakers.
