A rare facility wholly dedicated to humanities and arts research will be officially opened today at The University of Queensland (UQ).

UQ Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor David Siddle will open the Faculty of Arts Research Precinct and said the facility would establish UQ as a national leader in humanities research.

“UQ is is one of the very few universities in the country to have made such an investment in arts research,” Professor Siddle said.

“This concentration of resources will allow UQ to develop high profile research programs in Australian studies, media and cultural studies and intellectual history.”

The Precinct is located on the three upper levels of the Forgan-Smith Tower situated in the iconic Great Court at UQ’s St Lucia campus, Brisbane.

It is home to the Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies, the Australian Studies Centre, and the Centre for the History of European Discourses.

Professor Siddle said the facility had already captured imaginations around the country.

“Initially the research Centres and the precinct refurbishment were developed as a result of strategic funding from UQ. The Centres have subsequently expanded and have attracted substantial funding from external organisations such as the Australian Research Council,” he said.

“In 2001, the Faculty of Arts had only five full-time research staff across all Schools. Now the three Precinct Centres alone have 20 full-time researchers, drawn from other leading universities both national and international.
