A partner at Murphy Schmidt Solicitors is The University of Queensland Law Graduates Association 2008 Mentor of the Year.

Matthew Holmes received the award earlier this month at an evening hosted by the TC Beirne School of Law to thank mentors and students for their participation in the 2008 mentor program and to celebrate its success.

First year law student Bianca Kabel nominated Mr Holmes because of his support and willingness to give advice.

“My idea of a mentor was not to be a guiding guru beacon but to be an approachable light,” Ms Kabel wrote in her nomination.

“Mr Holmes has been all that and more. From the first informal meeting to the emailed pleas for advice my mentor has been there.”

The program was launched last year and has grown to include 88 mentors and 119 students, with the student demand now outweighing the supply of mentors.

The program partners Bachelor of Laws students with legal professionals who provide practical advice and guidance about studying and practising law.
