The University of Queensland has again received five star rankings as one of Australia’s best research universities in an independent ranking of Australian universities released today.

The 2009 edition of The Good Universities Guide awarded UQ the maximum five-star rating for research grants and research intensivity – the only Queensland university to receive this highest rating - and a further five stars for toughness to get in (St Lucia campus). UQ also earned four stars for staff qualifications, international enrolments, graduate salaries and equity group access.

Last year UQ was the only Queensland university included in the top 50 universities in the world in another independent ranking list - the annual world top 200 ranking, produced by the UK's Times Higher Education Supplement. UQ ranked at number 33.

In 2007 the Academic Ranking of World Universities undertaken by the Institute of Higher Education at Shanghai Jiao Tong University ranked UQ as the top university in Queensland and third nationally. UQ's regional rank in the Australia-Pacific region is 10-18.

This year’s rankings are expected to be announced on August 15.

In February this year, Shanghai Jiao Tong’s academic rankings by broad subject fields ranked UQ as one of the top 100 universities in the world in life and agricultural sciences and clinical medicine and pharmacy.

The Good Universities Guide is an independent consumer guide which provides ratings, rankings, comment and information about Australian higher education institutions.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Greenfield said the University of Queensland focused on integrating high-quality teaching and learning with excellent research.

“Our staff members have achieved continuing success in obtaining Australian Learning and Teaching Council teaching awards, grants and fellowships” he said.

“Our faculties and research institutes have a depth and breadth of expertise, and we are investing heavily in new teaching and learning spaces and technologies.”
