The University of Queensland has opened applications for its 2008 round of undergraduate equity scholarships for domestic students.

UQ Coordinator of Undergraduate Scholarships and Prizes Adriana Jumelet said the University understood that scholarships could often make the difference enabling students to gain qualifications.

“This is why we offer scholarships to students in all disciplines and at all UQ campuses,” she said.

Ms Jumelet said the University had a number of scholarships for full-time, undergraduate Commonwealth Supported (HECS-liable) students who were experiencing financial hardship.

These scholarships include:
• Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarships (CECS) valued at $2162 per year;
• Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships (CAS) valued at $4324 per year;
• CECS Associate Degree Scholarships valued at $2162 per year; and
• CAS Associate Degree Scholarships valued at $4324 per year.

The University also offers UQ Excellence Scholarships, and Group of Eight (Go8) Scholarships, each valued at $6000 per year.

The scholarships are intended to help alleviate some of the costs of university attendance.

Ms Jumelet said selection of these scholarships was based primarily on financial need and (particularly for Go8 and UQ Excellence Scholarships) academic merit.

“The University can also take into account factors such as educational disadvantage, membership of a specific equity group or significantly adverse personal circumstances,” she said.

Applications close at 5pm on Wednesday, February 13, 2008.
