A love of adventure and an enthusiasm for new challenges has led to a diverse career and an honorary doctorate for University of Queensland graduate and General Electric executive Mark Hutchinson.

Mr Hutchinson completed a Bachelor of Commerce at UQ in 1986, before embarking on an extensive global career.

He currently serves as an executive of GE, an American multinational conglomerate corporation, listed as the fourth-largest in the world by Forbes magazine.

His success has been recognised this week with an Honorary Doctorate of Business from UQ.

UQ Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Peter Høj said Mr Hutchinson’s impressive achievements made him an excellent candidate for the honour.

“Mr Hutchinson is a globally influential corporate executive who has held significant positions in organisations including Barclays Bank and, most recently, General Electric,” he said.

“Since joining GE in the mid-1990s, Mr Hutchinson has been involved in projects across North America, Europe, Asia and the Pacific Rim.

“This year, he was picked to lead GE’s US$17 billon integration with French multinational company Alstom.

“Mr Hutchinson’s success is a fantastic example of what our UQ graduates can go on to achieve.

“More than 220,000 students have graduated from UQ over the years, and our graduates live and work in more than 160 countries, demonstrating the global advantage a UQ education provides.”
