The University of Queensland will be a force to be reckoned with at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with 16 past and present students competing for gold and a staff member umpiring in the hockey.
The students and alumni will represent Australia in swimming, gymnastics, diving, athletics, rugby sevens, judo and triathlon over 11 days of competition from 23 July to 3 August. For all the latest results and upcoming events, click here.
UQ alumnus, and track and field athlete Caitlin Sargent, who graduated with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy in 2013, will be competing at her first commonwealth games.
She hopes to walk away with a medal in the 4x400m women’s relay event.
“I’ve been to world championships for athletics before but the thought of going to the Commonwealth Games raises it to a whole new level,” she said.
“Like the Olympic Games, the Commonwealth Games are only held every four years so I am thrilled to be a part of the team.”
UQ Advantage Office Director Dr Dino Willox will umpire in the women’s hockey matches at the Games as part of the Welsh team.
It will be Dr Willox's second Commonwealth Games stint, having umpired at the Delhi Games in 2010.
UQ Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Joanne Wright said it was a significant achievement to represent Australia at such a high-profile international sporting event.
“It is a great milestone to qualify for the Commonwealth Games, so it’s an honour to have many members from the UQ community competing on the world stage,” she said.
“UQ welcomes elite athletes, and has scholarships and partnerships in place to ensure our students can achieve their very best both within their chosen sports and at their studies.
“These individuals are an inspiration to others when it comes to successfully combining study with elite-level sport.
“I look forward to following our students, alumni and staff with great interest as they compete during the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.”
