Scottish physician Alexander Wood first developed a syringe with a needle fine enough to pierce the skin in 1853.

The technology has barely changed in 160 years.

The University of Queensland’s Professor Mark Kendall is revolutionising this technology with the needle-free vaccine patch.

Professor Kendall presented the Nanopatch at TEDGlobal 2013 in Edinburgh, the birthplace of the syringe. This TED talk is now available.
