The Australian Government has awarded two large clinical training grants to two teaching hospitals in the UQ School of Medicine’s Northside Clinical School - Caboolture Hospital ($9.5M) and Holy Spirit Northside Private Hospital ($4.8M).

These grants are part of the $90M Innovative Clinical Training and Teaching Grants (ICTTG) from the Australian Government.
Caboolture Hospital

Federal Minister for Health and Ageing Nicola Roxon this week announced at Caboolture Hospital that $9.5M has been awarded to the hospital and its educational partners, UQ, QUT & the Moreton Bay Division of General Practice. This amount represents more than 10% of the total amount awarded nationally.

The funding will go towards a new building for clinical training at the hospital, including a clinical skills centre, library, tutorial rooms, offices of Student Coordinators and Medical Education Officers and student common room.

Importantly for UQ, there are already a number of clinical placements from the UQ School of Medicine, and UQ School of Nursing and Midwifery. This facility, once completed will allow UQ to considerably increase the amount of clinical placements and enhance inter-professional learning. There is already a presence with an Academic Head and UQ student Coordinator of the UQ Northside Clinical School at Caboolture.

“This is now a huge opportunity for establishing a very strong UQ presence at this local community site, in an outer urban setting Head of UQ Northside Clinical School, Associate Professor Ian Yang said.

"This educational partnership will enhance our profile in the Caboolture community.

"Furthermore, this will enable novel clinical training and research to be undertaken — for example, the establishment of a Centre of Excellence in Clinical Communication and Leadership.”
Holy Spirit Northside Private Hospital, at The Prince Charles Hospital campus

Ms Roxon and Deputy Prime Minister & Treasurer The Honourable Wayne Swan, announced at Holy Spirit Northside Private Hospital that $4.8M has been awarded to the hospital and its educational partners, UQ, ACU & the Brisbane North Institute of TAFE.

This funding will go toward a new facility for innovative clinical training in a private hospital setting. This building will include a high technology clinical skills centre, simulation area as well as tutorial and seminar rooms.

“We currently have several students undertaking clinical placements within the Northside Clinical School who are completing portions of their course within the Holy Spirit Northside Private Hospital,” Associate Professor Yang said.

With this Federal funding, opportunities now exist for these numbers to expand as a growing number of clinicians discover the innumerable benefits of medical education within a teaching friendly private Hospital.

The UQ School of Nursing and Midwifery has had students placed within the hospital for two years, and the UQ Physician’s Assistants program is commencing this month with its inaugural intake.

The UQ School of Medicine has awarded The Holy Spirit Northside the title of teaching hospital in response to the hospital’s growing commitment to education.

“Many UQ Clinical teachers are co-located at both hospitals," Dr Yang said.

"The Prince Charles Hospital and the Holy Spirit Northside Private Hospital provide a unique cross-fertilisation opportunity for learning, discovery and engagement at this UQ node,” Associate Professor Yang said.
