It is my great pleasure to welcome you to UQ during its Centenary.

Whether you are a new student embarking on your next life adventure, or a familiar face that has already had a hand in making UQ what it is today, all of us can look forward to the coming academic year and its special Centenary events.

New students will quickly understand why we say that UQ has world-class teaching and learning facilities to prepare you for tomorrow. Our university also has a wide range of sporting, cultural and leisure facilities that I encourage you and your friends to enjoy. Our student population is diverse and dynamic, so you can embrace other cultures and customs, right here on campus.

Now is an exciting time to join the UQ family, with the UQ Advantage being expanded and improved to ensure it pays continuing dividends throughout your life. While studying, you can make the most of the local, national and international networks which open doors to experiences to help define you as a global citizen. These include international university exchanges, workplace internships, and ‘summer’ undergraduate research scholarships to sharpen your skills for learning and life. As well, you can share in the social and scholarly life of UQ residential colleges – even if you don’t live in a college.

The 100th birthday calendar will include the UQ Centenary Celebration Day on Sunday, April 18 – a day for your family and friends to join you at the St Lucia campus. The Centenary Oration Series will run through the year, and amongst its line-up of internationally respected thinkers and leaders will be 24-year-old Jack Manning Bancroft. Jack, a 2010 Young Australian of the Year finalist, is the CEO of a mentoring scheme for Indigenous Australians that he established while he was a student.

As a participant and contributor during the Centenary, you can help map the direction of our globally recognised university. Welcome to the new academic year, and to a continuing tradition of excellence in learning, discovery and engagement.
