Ten athletes from The University of Queensland are in the final stages of preparation for the 2013 World Summer University Games to be held in Kazan, Russia from 6 – 17 July.
The UQ contingent will make up part of the 152 student athletes from Australia.
Known as the Uniroos, the Australian team will compete for 13 days alongside 12,000 competitors from over 150 countries.
UQ Sport’s Uni Games Coordinator Emma Taylor said the event was one of the largest in the world and the athletes had great cause to be excited about what lies ahead.
“For these students to represent UQ and Australia in the one event is a big honour,” Ms Taylor said.
“The Summer Universiade is second only to the Olympic Games in terms of the size and calibre of competition.
“The swimming team is the largest group within the squad of Australians and we are excited to have Aisling Scott and Amy Smith competing as part of that team.
“We are also looking forward to seeing UQ sporting scholarship holder and 2013 Great Court Race winner Caitlin Sargent contest the 100m and 400m track and field events.
“Caitlin has an outstanding list of achievements to date, including winning a gold medal at the Australian Championships and being a representative at the World Athletics Championships.
“We are very proud to have such high calibre athletes at UQ,” she said.
