You can travel to Heron Island by catamaran or helicopter.

Tides, sea conditions, adverse weather and unforeseen circumstances can affect travel timetables.

To avoid disappointment, we recommend you allow extra time for travel to departure points and take out travel insurance.

If you want to travel by catamaran, we’ll arrange your tickets as part of your booking.

Timetable and check-in

The Heron Islander catamaran operated by Heron Island Resort travels between Gladstone Marina and Heron Island every day except Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Check in at Gladstone Marina by 8.30am.

Contact the marina if you experience issues on your day of travel from Gladstone.

Baggage allowance

Station guests are limited to two bags of personal items.

Email us at hirs@uq.edu.au before you start your journey if you have excess baggage so that we can advise marina staff.

Scientific equipment

We recommend you use Heron Island’s barge service to bring scientific equipment. 

You can’t transport chemicals on the catamaran.

Marine Helicopter Charter operates flights between Gladstone Airport and Heron Island. 

Flights are subject to availability and minimum numbers may apply.

Combined baggage allowance is dependent on passenger weights. You can transfer extra luggage on the Heron Islander catamaran.
