Support Heron Island Research Station and partner with us to take real action – right here on the Great Barrier Reef.

You know the Great Barrier Reef is beautiful and rich in marine life. You know it’s under threat from climate change and destructive species such as the crown of thorns starfish.

Like you, we won’t sit back and hope for the best.

Heron Island Research Station’s prime location – on the southern Great Barrier Reef – means global marine experts are in the right place to unlock answers to many of society’s greatest challenges.

By harnessing the chemicals produced by the reef’s animals, plants and microbes, experts can help cure disease, concentrate valuable metals from the ocean, and manufacture structures beyond human engineering.

Researchers also use our world-class facilities to understand how rising temperatures and ocean acidification affect reefs, and create innovative techniques to restore reefs and enhance recovery.

Make a gift

Your donation to Heron Island Research Station will help ensure this important work continues.

Scholarships, bursaries and other gifts also help us attract and support the brightest students, whatever their social or financial background.

Every gift – large or small – makes a difference.

Thank you

“Thank you so much to the community of donors for enabling me to receive a scholarship to pursue my studies in marine science, especially at Heron Island.”

Unlocking answers to society’s big questions

Reefs hold the key to unlocking answers to many of society’s greatest challenges. Its animals, plants and microbes produce chemicals that can be used to cure disease, concentrate valuable metals from the ocean, and manufacture structures beyond human engineering. The potential life-altering secrets the reef holds for all of us are endless. A gift to the UQ Marine Solutions Fund will help us positively change and protect the world's reefs, oceans and coasts.
