HIRS has long been recognised for excellence in marine science education. World class facilities and immediate access to the reef provide exceptional opportunities for hands-on exploration of scientific principles in the context of the world's largest coral reef ecosystem.

Senior high school, undergraduate and post-graduate groups use HIRS facilities as an integral part of their degree programs. All groups have access to teaching labs, aquaria decks, lab and field equipment, computers, library resources and boating services as well as the natural environment of Heron Island and its surrounding reefs.

Year 11 and 12 high school, and first and second year undergraduate groups may choose to administer their own curriculum or take advantage of the Live Learning Program provided by the station.
