A free seminar intended to help older people develop an effective relationship with the media will be held on the Gold Coast next month.

Dr Jo-Anne Everingham, from UQ’s Australasian Centre on Ageing, said the seminar would help seniors to work with the media to publicise their events, activities and issues, and build their media profile.

“There are dozens of social, action, support and recreation groups for seniors on the Gold Coast, many of which would like to be better known through publicity in their local media,” Dr Everingham said.

The seminar, to be held at Fradgley Hall in Burleigh Heads on Wednesday, July 23 at 10am, is open to all groups and organisations on the Gold Coast with an interest in ageing issues and improving the quality of life of older people.

It is an initiative of the Gold Coast Seniors Working Action Group – a loose network of organisations seeking to ensure people can age well in the Gold Coast community.

Val French, of Older People Speak Out (OPSO), will facilitate the session on Tips on Working with the Media to Publicise your Group and Seniors’ Options.

"It is essential that an organisation understands the media and how it works,” Ms French said.

“It is no use complaining journalists don't report your news if you give them nothing worth while to report.

“As well as learning new skills in media and communications, those at the seminar will also have an opportunity to share their experiences of working with the local Gold Coast media.”

Funded by an Australian Research Council Linkage Grant, this seminar is part of a project which aims to explore the potential for a range of organisations and individuals to work together to promote and achieve ageing well in the community.

The study is being run out of UQ’s Australasian Centre on Ageing and the UQ Boilerhouse Community Engagement Centre, in partnership with the Ipswich and Gold Coast City Councils, and the Queensland Government Department of Communities.

Anyone wishing to attend should RSVP to Dr Everingham on 07 3346 9371 by Friday, July 11.
