Six new scholarships for first year business students at The University of Queensland's Ipswich campus were presented at a ceremony on Thursday 27 April.

Two of these business "stars of tomorrow", Emma Fitzgerald, Newtown, and Reece Mitchell, Eastern Heights, are locals who enrolled in business programs at the UQ Ipswich campus earlier this year.

For both students, these scholarships represent more than a prize, they are a real confidence boost and a symbol of how far they have come since leaving school more than 12 months ago.

“When I graduated from high school, I knew I wanted to study something important and be part of something big,” Ms Fitzgerald said.

“I went to TAFE to study hospitality, which was where I discovered my career calling in event management.

“I believe I will make an impressive event manager and the new Bachelor of Business will help get me there.”

In addition to event management, students in the Bachelor of Business can choose from a wide range of majors, including accounting, hospitality management, online business, sport and leisure management and travel and tourism management.

For Ms Fitzgerald and Mr Mitchell, undertaking a specialised area of study will give them an edge and the scholarships will really set them apart and make a valued contribution toward the cost of their study.

Reece Mitchell is a Bachelor of Business Communication student who returned to study following a break year spent working.

“Taking time off was definitely what I needed and now I’m just that much more driven,” he said.

“This scholarship doesn’t just help pay for textbooks, it shows that I’ve stepped up my game and that I can succeed when I put my mind to it.”

Professor Peter Green, University of Queensland Business School Coordinator, Ipswich Campus, said the new scholarships were intended to encourage and recognise academic achievement, work experience and community service.

"The UQ Business School and the School of Tourism jointly offered these scholarships for the first time this year and we`ve been delighted by the response and the quality of the applications,” Professor Green said.

Professor Green said students enrolling mid-year into the Bachelor of Business and Bachelor of Business Communication programs would be eligible to apply for the same scholarships in semester 1, 2007.
