Leading mathematicians from across the world will converge at The University of Queensland next week to shed light on some key areas of contemporary mathematics.
The 2012 AMSI/ANU/UQ Winter School on Geometric Partial Differential Equations — to be held at UQ’s St Lucia Campus from 2-13 July — will be opened by Queensland Chief Scientist Dr Geoff Garrett AO.
“Mathematicians today combine insights from diverse areas of mathematical research to tackle some of the world’s most pressing problems arising from climate change, mining, transport, the environment and many other areas,” said UQ’s Head of Mathematics and Director of this year’s Winter School Associate Professor Joseph Grotowski.
“It is vital to foster the next generation of mathematicians, both theoretical and applied, and the Winter School provides one great way of doing this."
Director of the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) Professor Geoff Prince said: “The Winter School, now in its seventh year, recently received a commitment for funding by the Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education through the AMSI vacation schools and scholarships programs.”
“This recognition underpins the importance of the Winter School to Australia’s research training effort in the mathematical science,” he said.
A series of cutting-edge lectures will be conducted by leading international mathematicians, including Professor Gang Tian (Princeton University/Beijing University), Professor Richard Schoen (Stanford University), Professor James Sethian (University of California, Berkeley), Professor Michael Struwe (ETH-Zurich), Professor Tristan Rivière (ETH-Zurich), Professor Robert McCann (University of Toronto), Professor Neil Trudinger (Australian National University) and Professor Xu-Jia Wang (Australian National University).
During the event, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows will learn about current advances in geometric partial differential equations and will have an opportunity to brainstorm and interact with world-leading mathematicians.
Associate Professor Grotowski said that this year, a record number of participants had registered to attend the Winter School.
“We are delighted with the overwhelming response, and for the unique opportunity this event provides to our next generation of mathematicians," he said.
"There is no better way to learn than to be immersed with the world’s best.”
This year, the Winter School is supported by The University of Queensland, the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute, the Australian National University, the Beijing International Center for Mathematics Research, and the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences, Canada.
The annual AMSI vacation schools and scholarships programs are funded jointly by the Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education and the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute.
