25 June 2012

WHAT: Opening ceremony of 2012 AMSI/ANU/UQ Winter School on Geometric Partial Differential Equations (July 2-13, 2012)

WHEN: Commencing at 11.30am, Monday, 2 July 2012, with Queensland Chief Scientist Dr Geoff Garrett AO speaking.

WHERE: Science Learning Centre, Priestley Building 67, University of Queensland, St Lucia.

VISION/PICTURE OPPORTUNITIES: Official opening proceedings, with Queensland Chief Scientist Dr Geoff Garrett AO talking to international and local mathematicians, including the speakers, and student and postdoctoral participants.

WHO: Queensland Chief Scientist Dr Geoff Garrett AO, UQ DVCR Professor Alan Lawson, Director of the Winter School and UQ’s Head of Mathematics Associate Professor Joseph Grotowski, AMSI Director Professor Geoff Prince, ANU Professor Neil Trudinger, guest professors, Australian and international PhD students and postdoctoral research fellows, and representatives from the sponsors.

DETAIL: Mathematics is used by scientists to solve complex problems arising from climate change, mining, transport and many other areas, yet a recent report shows a decline in mathematics and science participation and literacy in Australian high schools (Health of Australian Science report, Office of the Chief Scientist, May 2012).

This school aims to inspire the next generation of mathematics leaders, including graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, to learn about current advances and to interact with world-leading mathematicians.

PROGRAMME: This year’s programme will focus on the recent progress in one of the key mathematics areas applied today - non-linear partial differential equations and their applications. Lectures by leading international mathematicians, including Gang Tian (Princeton/ Beijing), Richard Schoen (Stanford), James Sethian (Berkeley), Michael Struwe (ETH-Zurich), Tristan Rivière (ETH-Zurich), Robert McCann (Toronto), Neil Trudinger (ANU) and Xu-Jia Wang (ANU).

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: A media release will be provided later this week prior to next week’s opening ceremony.

MEDIA INQUIRIES: UQ School of Mathematics and Physics Communications Officer Aarti Kapoor (0449 863 208, a.kapoor@uq.edu.au)

PARKING: Media parking will be provided. Please contact Aarti Kapoor (details above) and provide registration details and timeframes to reserve a park.

BACKGROUND: The Winter School, now in its seventh year, gives mathematicians access to courses in contemporary mathematics, taught by top mathematicians. This year’s school is supported by the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI), the Australian National University (ANU), the University of Queensland (UQ), the Beijing International Center for Mathematics Research (BICMR), and the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS), Canada.
