The UQ Ipswich open day on August 20 will showcase the stunning $23 million campus stage two development which opened to students this year.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International and Development) Professor Trevor Grigg invited the local community, potential students, their families and friends to see the state-of-the-art new stage two in the centre of the 25-hectare Ipswich campus, following the opening of the $17 million first stage last year.

"In Stage Two people will find a brilliantly developed site, with refurbished old buildings complemented by effective landscaping and very appealing facilities for staff and students," said Professor Grigg.

Stage two required the adaptive re-use of eight buildings, including the earliest buildings on the campus in a heritage precinct, and construction of a twin block multi level building 12.

Open day activities, while spread around the campus, will centre on an academic precinct in the foyer of Building 12 (entry via Salisbury Road or Parker Avenue) from 10am to 2pm, and program seminars in the building's room 116 from 10.30am on Business Management, E-Commerce, Information Environments, Contemporary Studies, Social Science, Behavioural Studies, Business Communication, Education and the Community Centre.

Other activities at the campus will include a virtual heritage tour, real campus tour with guides, Internet quizzes, chance to test drive a tutorial, learn the difference between a MOO and a MUD, mini lectures on topics including criminology, the Columbine High School shootings, IQ testing and identity politics from Malcolm X to Madonna.

The UQ Ipswich Library will offer tours, and open a Cybercafe. The Self Directed Learning Centre in Building 12 will host "Ask a Tech" for anyone with computer problems, and also interactive activities including computer games/simulators. Attractions will also include a Medieval display and Archery range, jazz bands, the Cambrian Youth Choir, roving music, face painting, jumping castles for children and adults, classic motor bikes, and representation by community and government groups including Ipswich City Council, Queensland Rail, Centrelink and HECS.

Contenders are also planning their tactics for the inaugural UQ Ipswich staff versus students tug-?o-war.

A shuttle bus will meet trains arriving from Brisbane at the Ipswich Railway Station and bring visitors to the campus. The first bus will depart from the station at 9.10am
