Emmanuel College’s Centre for the Study of Science, Religion and Society (CSSRS) invite you to a presentation by Professor Rodney Wolff on “The probability that God exists: A review and a reflection”.
SUMMARY: Richard Swinburne initiated, or at least formalised, academic discourse about the existence of God within a probabilistic framework. This is set against a long history of philosophical examination of the topic which has been largely deterministic in nature; that is, seeking a binary outcome as to the question of God's existence. This presentation will largely focus on reviewing key concepts in Swinburne's arguments, as well as subsequent critique thereof, and conclude with some reflections on epistemological and theological issues which remain unaddressed. Along the way, consideration will be given as to how a probabilistic framework may be able to offer a common hermeneutic for the engagement of science and religion.
BIOGRAPHY: The Reverend Professor Rodney Wolff is Chair of Geostatistics and Mine Planning at The University of Queensland. He has previously held chairs in Statistics and in Financial Econometrics, and has been a Senior Research Fellow of Jesus College, Oxford. His doctorate was on statistical aspects of deterministic chaos, also from Oxford. He is an assistant priest at St Augustine's Anglican Church, Hamilton.
