Dr Donald Argus AC

Don Argus was appointed Chairman of the Australia Advisory Board of Bank of America Merrill Lynch, commencing 1 July 2010, and subsequently a Member of Bank of America’s inaugural Global Advisory Council in January 2013.

Don retired from his role as Chairman of BHP Billiton, the world’s largest diversified resource company, on 30 March 2010. When Don assumed the role as Chairman in April 1999 the market capitalisation was A$17.28 billion; at the time of his retirement it had a combined market capitalisation of A$226.5 billion*.

Don is a Director of Hakluyt & Company’s International Advisory Board. He retired as Chairman of Brambles Industries in January 2008 and as a Director of Australian Foundation Investment Company Limited in October 2013.

Don was the former CEO and Managing Director of the National Australia Bank between 1990 and 1999. In that period its market capitalisation grew from A$5.5 billion to a peak of A$37 billion. EPS growth in that period grew at an extraordinary rate of 128%.

His CV records involvement in Government reviews, industry groups and was a member of the International Advisory Councils of the New York Stock Exchange and Allianz Insurance until mid 2009. In 2011 Don headed what has become known as the ‘Argus Review’ into the Australian Cricket Team’s performance commissioned by Cricket Australia.

Don received an Officer of the Order of Australia award in 1998, and subsequently, in January 2010, was raised to a Companion of the Order of Australia for eminent service to business and commerce through leadership in the mining and finance industries, and to the community through the promotion of philanthropy, and executive roles in conservation, health, charitable and sporting organisations. Don was also awarded the Centenary Medal in April 2003 for service to Australian society through business.

Don is a Senior Fellow (SF) of Financial Services Institute of Australasia (Finsia) and a Fellow of Certified Practising Accountants Australia (CPA). He is an alumnus of the Harvard University Advanced Management Programme, and has been awarded honorary degrees from Monash University (Doctor of Laws), Griffiths University (Doctor of the University) and The University of Queensland (Doctor of Business).
