Event Description

Full Description:
Concerns about a rising religious authority in secular societies have inspired calls for education to engender a more robust citizenship amongst young Australians. A new, strengths-based Australian Health and Physical Education (HPE) Curriculum seeks to meet this challenge. But to what extent does religion serve as a resource for healthy living?

This presentation provides a rationale for a research agenda that seeks to obtain insight into how young people are navigating religious practices and secular messages delivered through school HPE for healthy living through an ethnographic study that employs Foucauldian ethics and salutogenic research approaches.

The presenter, Dr Louise McCuaig, currently coordinates the internationally recognised HPE teacher education program at The University of Queensland, School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences. Louise’s current research interests include school based health education, health literacy, health education, teacher education and student transition.
