Title: Molecular Mechanisms of AMPA receptor trafficking

Abstract:
The AMPA-type glutamate receptors (AMPARs) mediate the majority of fast excitatory synaptic transmission in mammalian central nervous system. Dynamic changes in synaptic strength, known as synaptic plasticity, are thought to underlie information coding and storage during learning and memory. Aberrant trafficking of AMPARs into and out of synapses usually leads to impairment in synaptic plasticity and deficits in learning and memory. More importantly, evidence in the literature has shown that defective glutamatergic neurotransmission contributes to cognitive decline associated with many neurodegenerative diseases and neuropsychiatric disorders. Here, I will present data and discuss our efforts in understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying the regulation of AMPAR trafficking by AMPAR interacting proteins as well as by post-translational modifications that occur on their carboxy-termini.
