Event Description
- Full Description:
- In his massive encyclopedia of natural history, Pliny the Elder in the 1st Century makes use of the traditional term *barbarus* repeatedly. Two centuries later, Solinus converted Pliny’s work into a one-volume book entitled *A Collection of Wonderful Things*, which is so close to Pliny that he was dubbed ‘Pliny’s
ape’. But was he? Looking at his use of the term *barbarus* shows how his concepts differ from Pliny.
