- FAITH & PUBLIC OFFICE
Conference — Thursday 3 September 2015
To what extent should the duties expected of people who hold high public office constrain the expression of their personal faith?
To what extent should their personal faith influence the performance of their public duties?
Much consideration has been given in recent years to questions of the relationship between faith and politics, but most of these discussions have been generic in nature, and have tended to focus on the role of religious beliefs in the formulation of public policy in a very general sense. What these debates have not focussed on, however, are the special issues that arise when a person holds an official position which imposes on that person special public duties which constrain the operation of his or her private convictions, whether these convictions are of a religious, political or other nature.
The Faith and Public Office conference will address these latter kinds of questions from two perspectives. Firstly, a number of Christian individuals who have held high public office will reflect on their experiences in dutifully performing their official responsibilities in a manner consistent with, and perhaps even informed by, their personal faith. Secondly, prominent specialists in political philosophy, law and theology will offer academic perspectives on the question of the legitimate role of faith convictions in high public office. By bringing together practitioners and academics in this way, the conference promises to investigate in a fresh way the very unique and important questions that arise when people of faith hold positions of high public office.
