Event Description

Full Description:
In association with the exhibition 'Hung out to dry', please join creative consortium Drs Allison Holland, Naomi Stead and Kelly Greenop, along with exhibiting artists Mari Hirata and Chris Bennie, as they discuss the stories and observations, personal and communal that reflect on the essential and everyday activity of domestic laundry practices.

Panellists:

Dr Chris Bennie is a New Zealand born artist, living and working in Brisbane, Australia. His artwork has been included in national and international group exhibitions including 'The National Artists-Self Portrait Prize 2013', The University of Queensland Art Museum; 'Biennale of Sydney: Revolutions – Forms That Turn' (2008); 'Contemporary Australia: Optimism', Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane (2008); and 'Plus Factors', Australian Centre of Contemporary Art, Melbourne (2006).

Mari Hirata is a visual artist currently residing and working on the Gold Coast. Mari’s art practice often revolves around her primary subject, multiples of ‘High Heel Shoes’, and her work often draws on the aesthetics and sensibilities of traditional Japanese art and design. Her works have been exhibited in various group and solo exhibitions and housed in collections around Australia.

Dr Allison Holland (chair) graduated from The University of Melbourne’s Masters of Art Curatorship in 2001, and completed her PhD (Art History) in 2008. Allison’s research interest is Japanese art with a focus on the use of technologies in contemporary art. With professional experience as a curator and paper conservator, Allison has curated exhibitions on International and Australian prints and drawings, Australian colonial history and Joseph Beuys.

Dr Kelly Greenop teaches design, architectural social science and research in the School of Architecture and conducts research within the Aboriginal Environments Research Centre (AERC) and the Research Centre ATCH (Architecture Theory Criticism History) at The University of Queensland. Her research has focused on work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in urban Brisbane, using ethnographic techniques to document the place experiences and attachment, and the importance of housing, place, family and country for urban Indigenous people.

Dr Naomi Stead is Associate Professor in the School of Architecture at The University of Queensland, where she is also Deputy Director of the Research Centre ATCH (Architecture Theory Criticism History). Her research interests lie broadly within the critical and cultural studies of architecture. She is editor of the book 'Semi-detached: Writing, representation and criticism in architecture' (Uro, 2012), and co-editor of the award-winning online journal 'Parlour: Women, Equity, Architecture'.
