Event Description
- Full Description:
- 2pm: 'A Journey in the South of Roman Lusitania' - Ms Susan Edmondson
We will join Sue on her trail of discovery in Portugal, from Ossonoba (Modern Faro) around the coast to Troia, just south of Lisbon. She will describe, with illustrations, ancient harbours and some interesting villas, and the garum factory at Troia, currently under investigation, as well as the town of Mirobriga. Sue was the Betty Fletcher Memorial Travelling Scholar for 2011.
2.30pm: ‘Constantine and Constantinople’ - Dr Caillan Davenport
The city of Constantinople, founded by the emperor Constantine in A.D. 324 on the site of Byzantium, is conventionally referred to as the 'capital' of the 'Eastern Roman Empire', later the 'Byzantine Empire'. This talk will go back to the beginning and investigate precisely why Constantine decided to found a new city named after himself, and why he chose the site on the Bosphorus. It will then consider the short-term and long-term significance of the founding of this 'New Rome' for the government and administration of the Roman empire.
