Event Description

Full Description:
The Sustainable Minerals Institute is hosting a seminar this week by Dr. Bethanna Jackson, Senior Lecturer from Victoria University of Wellington. Dr Jackson will be discussing “Mapping Impacts of Land Management on Ecosystem Response”.

Following the recent formalisation of the ecosystem services concepts by the United National Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA, 2005), a framework which defines the benefits people derive from a range of ecosystem processes, a variety of decision support tools have emerged seeking to identify, characterize, and value multiple ecosystem goods and services to inform decision making. This talk discusses progress and future plans for one such tool: the Land Utilisation and Capability Indicator (LUCI) framework.

LUCI examines the impact of current and potential interventions on carbon sequestration/emissions, water quality, contribution of priority habitats towards biodiversity goals, flood mitigation, water supply, erosion and sediment delivery, and agricultural production. The potential of the landscape to provide ecosystem service benefits is a function of both the biophysical properties of individual landscape elements and their configuration. In this talk, case studies from Wales, England and New Zealand will be presented, and ongoing work and plans to modify the framework and support datasets in other countries (including Australia) will be discussed.

Dr Bethanna Jackson is the lead scientist and architect of the land management decision support framework and associated software package “LUCI”.
