Event Description

Full Description:
The provision of care to new mothers, like health care provision more generally, has been shaped by the retrenchment of publicly funded services, and an increased reliance on markets or families to provide care. Australia’s stratified public and private health care systems add an additional level of complexity to the shaping and provision of health care services, and to the health outcomes for new mothers. In this paper we examine the extent to which newly parenting women in Queensland rely on market mechanisms for care services that had been, or may still be available, through the public sector.

We analyse the experiences of sixty mothers from four case study sites in Queensland, Australia. Our findings indicate that post birth care has been effectively demedicalised, and the public provision of maternal and infant care has become increasingly limited. As a result, the marketization of care has become a reality for many women, particularly those birthing in the private sector. We identify a number of concerns with these trends, including the inequity of current service provision, as well as concerns about quality of care and accountability.

Maria is a CI on the national evaluation of the Paid Parental Leave scheme, the Dad and Partner Pay scheme, and worked with the Queensland Centre for Mothers and Babies on the evaluation of the Universal Postnatal Contact Service in Queensland.
