- The HMS seminar series presents:
The devil is in the detail!! Methods for collection of dietary intake data.
Abstract:
Much research uses measures of dietary intake to relate either nutrients or specific foods to health outcomes. But understanding the methods of collecting dietary intake data is crucial to getting answers more correct. A very recent example is that of the preliminary results from the national survey, released in May this year, which includes caveats about the high levels of underreporting. The method used should be capable of answering the question asked – whether it is about usual intake, current intake, specific foods or nutrients. This needs an understanding of measurement theory, precision and what ‘accuracy’ means, as well as who can report more accurately. Much of the published literature fails to include the appropriate level of detail of their method of collecting dietary information or in fact use incorrect methods or correct methods incorrectly implemented.
This seminar explains methods designed to establish either current or usual intakes, their sources of error and interpretation of the tools used to assess intakes. It is the devil in the detail that makes the difference!
Presenter:
Professor Sandra Capra AM, PhD, FDAA is a Professor of Nutrition in the School of Human Movement Studies. She has served on many local, state and national committees influencing policy and practice in nutrition as well as education, workforce and systems, including the national groups setting the nutrient reference values for Australia and New Zealand and the Dietary Guidelines for Australia. These latter relied on a strong understanding of measuring dietary intakes. She has a long term interest in practice based research, dietary methods, tools development, systems and outcomes and the application of tools to various population groups. Sandra has been recognised for her service to nutrition and dietetics by being appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2003. She is a Fellow of the Dietitians Association of Australia and was elected to life membership of the DAA in 2001. She is the current President of the International Confederation of Dietetic Associations.
