Event Description

Full Description:
HMS seminar series presents:
Fitness and fatness: A biomedical and sociocultural discussion

Abstract:
Society is obsessed with obesity and we are constantly reminded that over 60% of Australians are overweight or obese. In this presentation we offer two interpretations of the fitness and fatness issue. First, biomedical data will be presented indicating that fitness is much more important for health outcomes than fatness. Second, the obesity obsession will be considered from a sociocultural perspective that ‘locates’ this issue in the hearts, minds and politics of contemporary Australia.

Presenters:
Prof. Coombes’ research interests focus on determining the optimal exercise prescription for improving health. With theoretical backgrounds in biochemistry and physiology he conducts human studies and basic science projects.

Prof Tinning’s research interests are informed by a socially critical perspective. His interests and experience include the investigation of physical education pedagogy, pedagogical work for the body and physical education and the healthy citizen.
