Course description

From sequencing of many human genomes to image processing of hundreds of brains in a hospital and the counting of births and deaths of trees across the world, analysis and interpretation of biological data often requires advanced computational methods. In this course students will continue to build their foundations in programming and modelling of biological phenomena. They will learn methods of efficiently simulating biological processes in order to make predictions about expected patterns that can then be compared to empirical data. These include both deterministic models based on differential equations as well as different types of stochastic models. Students will also learn how to efficiently fit complex models to large data sets, in particular by using Markov chain Monte Carlo methods. A wide range of biological examples will be considered, including from the fields of infectious disease epidemiology, systems biology, ecology and evolutionary biology.
