Course description

The course studies what is considered as China's greatest novel, Dream of the Red Chamber, also known as the Story of the Stone. The importance of the novel arises from both its artistic excellence and its popularity throughout the last 200 years. The course included readings and discussion of selected texts from the novel plus viewing and evaluation of the TV adaption of the novel. It is aimed at native and background speakers of Chinese and non-native speakers with an advanced command of the Chinese language. The course emphasizes developing students' reading skills in Chinese and their ability to analyze the literary merits of the texts. Attention will also be paid to the social and cultural contexts of the novel to enhance students' understanding of late imperial China. This course may be cancelled if there are fewer than 20 enrolments.
