The University of Queensland (UQ) [St. Lucia] through the School of Human Movement and Nutrition Studies (HMNS) offers a course dedicated to the study of the Olympic Movement run by the Centre for Olympic Studies director, Dr. Ian Jobling.

As well, UQ and HMNS offer a number of sport-related courses across a variety of academic disciplines that examine issues closely related to the Olympic Movement.

HIST3003: The Olympic Movement

HIST3003: The Olympic Movement in Society

HIST3003 involves the "examination of the historical, political, economic, cultural and educational aspects of the ancient Olympic Games and the modern Olympic Games, especially the emergence and significance of the modern Olympic Movement." (HIST3003, UQ).

Throughout this course, students are given the opportunity to explore the Olympic Movement from a perspective that is unable to be achieved elsewhere. With the first-hand experiences of the esteemed, Dr. Ian Jobling and the resources available at UQ (the Centre of Olympic Studies and the Brundage Collection), students are able to discover the true roots of the Olympic Movement and develop their own understanding of the Olympics as an international phenomenon.

During the semester, many guest speakers give presentations on their personal experiences and views of the Olympic Games. These may include Olympic athletes such as:

  • Susan O'Neill (Swimming: Medallist at 1992, 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games, IOC member 2000-2006)
  • Kim Cooper (Softball: Bronze Medallist 2000; Vice-President, Queensland Olympic Council; Chair - Education Commission, QOC)
  • Fiona Hannan (Basketball: Bronze Medallist 1996 and European Handball 2000)
  • David Thiele (Swimming: Gold Medallist 1956 and 1960)
  • Steven Bradbury (Speed Skating: Gold Medallist 2002, Bronze Medallisy 1994)

Students finish the course with an exclusive insight into the Olympic Movement and may even be chosen to travel to Greece to participate in the International Olympic Academy for six weeks.

HIST3003 is only offered at the University of Queensland, St Lucia Campus in the 1st Semester of each year.

For more information on the course, either visit the HIST3003 Course Profile or email Dr. Ian Jobling.
