Horse and dog owners are being encouraged to enrol their animal friends in a free physio session at The University of Queensland Gatton campus during October and November.

The free physio sessions form an important part of the training for qualified physiotherapists to extend their qualifications to allow them to treat musculoskeletal and other health problems in animals.

Animal owners in the local Gatton, Toowoomba, Esk, Laidley and Ipswich areas who have a horse or dog that suffers from lameness, back problems of a known origin or other mobility problems are especially encouraged to attend according Dr Catherine McGowan, Animal Physiotherapy Program Coordinator.

“Consultations are conducted under veterinary supervision with postgraduate students undertaking the Master of Animal Studies, specialising in animal physiotherapy, at UQ Gatton, as part of their practical instruction.” Dr McGowan said.

“The students are already qualified physiotherapists applying their skills to the equine and canine species. Advice from attending vets and a qualified animal physiotherapist will be provided to clients at the end of each session.”

The Masters of Animal Studies (Animal Physiotherapy) program was developed by veterinary, physiotherapy, health and rehabilitation specialists and is offered exclusively by UQ. The two-year program is open to qualified physiotherapists who want to employ their skills in the treatment of animals.

Horses are required for Monday 3 October and Tuesday 22 November. Dogs are required for 5 and 8 October, and 23 November.

“Bookings are essential for the free physio assessments and places are always in high demand so making an early booking is advised.” Dr McGowan said.
