Brisbane City Council advises that some parking spaces will be unavailable and pedestrian traffic temporarily relocated further west on the footpath in a small section of Sir William MacGregor Drive, St Lucia, from Thursday, May 5 until Thursday May 12.
The changes to traffic movement coincide with the start of stage one of preliminary works for construction of the Dutton Park-St Lucia bridge. The bus, bicycle and pedestrian link between Dutton Park and The University of Queensland’s St Lucia campus will enter the UQ parklands in this vicinity.
A construction site will be fenced until the bridge link is finished to permit preparation work. Vehicle traffic flow will continue along Sir William MacGregor Drive as normal, except for the reclaimed parking spaces. Traffic attendants will signal turning trucks into the construction site.
Preparatory clearing work for the bridge will result in the loss of some trees, including weed species, from the riverbank and adjoining areas where the bridge enters the campus. A wildlife specialist has been engaged to ensure the safety of any affected wildlife species.
The University is working with the Brisbane City Council to limit the loss of vegetation and ensure a replanting program of substantial appropriate species to compensate as part of landscaping works.
Further bridge construction activity on the UQ side of the river will continue in 2005/2006, with an official commissioning of the bridge planned for early 2007.
