Over 1000 students graduated from health sciences at The University of Queensland last year.
On May 4, at the University’s annual Thanksgiving Service, past and present health science students will have the opportunity to thank donors whose generosity contributed to their success.
UQ health science graduates become doctors, dentists, pharmacists, physiotherapists and a broad range of other health professionals and scientists.
These graduates and the thousands who follow them can attribute much of their learning to the quality facilities provided by UQ Anatomy and Developmental Biology.
Bequest program manager and Chair of the Thanksgiving Service Committee Leo Brown said the donations were crucial to the success of educational programs for students.
The University receives approximately 60 donors’ bodies from the greater Brisbane area each year.
“The University of Queensland has a long tradition of paying tribute to donors who have willed their bodies for medical science and anatomy teaching,” Mr Brown said.
“This service is a public demonstration of the appreciation shown by University staff and students for these valuable gifts.”
“These gifts make a significant contribution in allowing students to learn about the complexities and the infinite variability of the human body.”
The multi-faith service is also an opportunity for relatives and friends to remember their loved ones through prayer, song and ceremony.
A central feature of the service is the Book of Remembrance, which records all donors to The University of Queensland and forms part of a candle lighting ceremony.
The Lighting of the Candles is a gesture symbolising the transfer of knowledge from donors to students.
The service will be held on May 4 at 5.30pm at the UQ Centre, Union Rd, St Lucia campus, and is open to the public.
