Brisbane’s book lovers will head to The University of Queensland’s St Lucia campus next week to grab copies of their favourite read or hunt down a literary bargain.

With about 120,000 books on sale, the UQ Alumni Book Fair is known for it its huge range of books and specialist reading material.

The fair will be held at the UQ Centre, Union Rd, St Lucia campus, from April 23 to April 27 and will open its doors on Saturday, April 23, at 11am.

Textbooks, novels, magazines, sheet music, records and CDs will be on sale.

Customers will need to arrive early. Book fair convenor Feona Walker said in previous years, the fair had been so popular that customers began queuing early and those first in the door raced for copies of popular books.

The UQ Alumni Book Fair stands out from other second hand books sales because of the quality of specialist books available and the care taken to sort the books volunteer Myriam Preker said.

“The Alumni Book Fair has something that none of the other book sales have and that’s good sorting. You will find that most of the volunteers in charge of an area have expertise in that area,” Ms Preker said.

“It means that when you come to buy a book, it’s much less daunting and books are easier to find.”

As part of the fair, a Rare Book Auction will be held at 6.30pm (with a public viewing from 5pm) on Friday, April 22, at the Playhouse, Women’s College, College Rd, St Lucia campus.

The Alumni Association of The University of Queensland Inc. runs the fair and funds from the sale remain with the Alumni Association for distribution to UQ facilities through the Benefactions Committee.

Past benefactions included funds for electric scooters for disabled students, sports scholarships, bursaries and travelling scholarships for staff and students, and funding for University art galleries and museums.
