The University of Queensland’s Moreton Bay Research Station (MBRS) has achieved the prestigious Green Globe Benchmarked Certificate under the new Green Globe Certification program.

The Certificate recognises the operation’s commitment to operating at the world’s highest environmental standard.

The MBRS has spent considerable time benchmarking its energy and water consumption, waste production and disposal as well as implementing an integrated environmental and social policy,” according to station co-manager Dr Kathy Townsend.

“In particular we have achieved best practice results in energy consumption, water consumption and social commitment,” she said.

These measures will deliver ongoing reduction of non-renewable resources, extensive cost savings and secure a sustainable commercial and ecological future for the University.

Cathy Parsons, Chief Executive Officer of GGAP International, said she was delighted MBRS had achieved benchmarked status.

“The Moreton Bay Research Station is an inspiration to all those people committed to environmentally sustainable practices,” she said.

“They have demonstrated through a variety of initiatives, that the business and its employees can make a difference to reducing their environmental impact. The commitment they have shown in signing up to participate in the Green Globe program and their achievements set an example for other businesses to follow.”

The University of Queensland’s Moreton Bay Research Station (MBRS), part of UQ’s Centre for Marine Studies, is one of Australia’s foremost marine research and education station and is ideally situated on North Stradbroke Island, 12 kms off the coast of the Brisbane.

Moreton Bay Research Station is situated in an area of significant environmental value and cultural heritage. Moreton Bay Research Station’s Environmental Management System (EMS) was created to highlight the importance The University of Queensland placed on identifying and managing the impacts that the Station’s activities may have on the environment.

The environmental programs and procedures have been based on the Environmental Protection Act 1994 and associated legislation. In addition, the University has liaised with stakeholders to ensure that relevant environmental issues have been identified and addressed.
