UQ has joined Telecom and two universities in New Zealand to launch a trans-Tasman management development program for Telecom Group managers (Telecom and AAPT).

Telecom is partnering with The University of Queensland Business School the University of Waikato Management School and the University of Otago School of Business to bring together the program.

University of Queensland Business School Professor of Management Geoff Kiel said the school was pleased to be involved in such a unique program.

“The UQ Business School’s strength in research and teaching will offer Telecom staff internationally respected supervision and will promote the skills needed to build their management capabilities," Professor Kiel said.

“As the modules are at postgraduate level they will provide a greater application in learning and the integration of business knowledge.”

Telecom Group General Manager of Human Resources Trisha McEwan said in the competitive and fast moving telecommunications industry, Telecom was increasingly focusing on building and maintaining management capability and expertise.

“Our managers will be exposed to the latest management knowledge and theories delivered by some of the most respected researchers in Australasia,” Ms McEwan said.

The initiative brings together existing postgraduate papers complemented by a management coaching module for the managers of staff taking part. This aims to help managers to become more effective mentors and increase the benefit of the program to the workplace.

The academic program also uses action learning techniques, where participants work through a specific issue or project from their workplace.

“This approach combines academic rigour with the opportunity to use the experience gained from working in one of the range of roles that Telecom provides,” she said.

The program is in four modules covering aspects of management including self, managing others and business performance. Each formal module is about six weeks long involving approximately 100-150 hours of work including readings, assignments and on-campus workshops.

“Participants who successfully complete the course will have three postgraduate papers which can be used to complete a qualification,” Ms McEwan said.

The project aims to provide Telecom managers with a unique learning opportunity. It is one of many initiatives planned to accelerate the development of Telecom’s leadership and management strength.
