The topic of global journalism will be discussed at a free public lecture at The University of Queensland on July 18.
UQ's Centre for International Journalism will present the lecture, which will be held at 12.30pm in Room 323 of the Steel Building, St Lucia.
The lecture, entitled Letter From America: The New Yorker to Global Journalism, will be presented by Tom Kunkel, Dean of the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland, United States.
Mr Kunkel has written several books, including Genius in Disguise: Harold Ross of the New Yorkerand Enormous Prayers: A Journey into the Priesthood.
His collection of Harold Ross' correspondence, entitled Letters From The Editor, was published by the Modern Library and was selected as a New York Times Notable Book.
He has also written various articles for publication in the American Journalism Review, Sports Illustrated, Hope and George.
Prior to working at the University of Maryland, Mr Kunkel was director and editor of Project on the State of the American Newspaper, an examination of the journalism trade.
The 18-part series appeared in American Journalism Review and the first volume of the series was published by the University of Arkansas Press.
Mr Kunkel has spent the majority of his working life in newspaper management, most recently as deputy managing editor of the San Jose Mercury News.
He has also worked for the Miami Herald, New York Times, Cincinnati Post, Arizona Trend Magazine and Knight-Ridder's Columbus Ledger-Enquirer.
On July 16, Mr Kunkel will be the keynote speaker at a conference for journalism professionals, entitled Mediating Globalisation: Challenges For International Journalism in the 21st Century, organised by the Foundation for Development Co-operation in association with UQ's Centre for International Journalism and the Commonwealth Journalists' Association.
