The University of Queensland is holding an intensive weekend course of introductory Egyptian hieroglyphic classes for members of the public from Friday July 6 to Sunday, July 8.
The course is being organised by UQ, its School of History, Philosophy, Religion and Classics, and the University's Department of Classics and Ancient History, in conjunction with the Friends of Antiquity.
Postgraduate research assistant at the Australian Centre for Egyptology at Macquarie University, Sydney, Christian Knoblauch will be guest lecturer. Mr Knoblauch's doctoral thesis is based upon documents of the Middle Kingdom - the language of the course.
Besides his scholarship in hieroglyphics, Mr Knoblauch has worked extensively as an archaeologist in Egypt and spent time with the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, recording and drawing artefacts and studying inscriptional material.
The course will begin with a session at Room 388, Goddard Building, St Lucia on Friday July 6 at 7.30pm.
Cost is $100 (including booklet) or $85 for full-time students and concessions.
