BEA Systems, one of the world's leading e-business infrastructure software companies, today announced a relationship with The University of Queensland (UQ) to help enhance e-business management and technical skills for up-and-coming e-business leaders.

Offered through the Technology and Innovation Management Centre (TIMC) at UQ, the Master of Technology Management course (MTM) focuses on the role that technology and innovation play in shaping business success in today's knowledge economy.

Its purpose is to equip business managers with the knowledge base and tools required to operate effectively in a contemporary e-enabled business world.

One of the first tertiary programs to run using BEA software, the MTM course will examine business models and technology management in the rapidly evolving world of e-business.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International and Development) Professor Trevor Grigg commended the new partnership, saying: 'This relationship offers exciting prospects for our course participants. In addition to the immediate benefits we can offer students, there's scope for other research and industry developments along the way. BEA's software has the availability and capacity to innovate even further.'

Matthew McLaughlin, BEA's Vice President Operations - Asia commented: 'BEA has always valued the role that educational programs play to develop expertise in the region. We believe this relationship with UQ perfectly complements our desire to enhance local industry skills and support future ebusiness leaders. After all, helping businesses to become e-businesses is BEA's core focus.'

'The MTM course is innovative in its flexible delivery, global reach and quality of content. It's built on solid technology management and business principles, which are imperative to ebusiness success.'

To meet the demands of professional students, TIMC courses allow students to combine quality curriculum content via the web with short intensive blocks of lectures out of business hours. TIMC courses have been developed over 10 years and are highly regarded by industry. The face-to-face meetings allow students to engage with real organisations like BEA, and learn from the experiences of fellow students. For these meetings, BEA will provide a venue for Sydney-based students.

BEA is further supporting the program by working with the university to develop methodologies and materials around BEA products such as Process Integrator, Campaign Manager, and by creating eBusiness scenarios that address infrastructure architecture.

BEA is providing free software licences of selected products for instructors to use in their course curriculum. The BEA education program was initiated in response to the escalating demand for highly qualified business managers and developers by Australian businesses.

The BEA education program
The BEA education program encourages Australia's tertiary education institutions to incorporate hands-on experience with BEA products in their course programs, by providing course instructors with free educational software licences for lab production, as well as case studies, code samples and evaluation software for use by students.

Key technologies such as Java, XML, and CORBA are among today's basic requirements for the most highly desirable positions. Experience with the e-commerce technologies based on these standards, such as BEA WebLogic Server and BEA WebLogic Commerce Server, will help students gain a competitive edge in today's IT job market.

BEA Systems in Australia and New Zealand has been actively educating the market about Internet technology and business practices. Universities and technical institutions have incorporated BEA products into their curriculum to enable students to be equipped with skills in high demand for careers in fields such as e-commerce and enterprise Java development.

The Program offers free instructor, lab production and student user licences, free operations support services for instructors, and large reductions on full-production licences for participating universities for development and deployment outside the lab.

As part of the program, BEA will also assist institutions with marketing initiatives and advertising course benefits through BEA's Developer website and EducateIT, a leading online education and training resource. BEA will also offer operations support for lecturers, who can register for web-support or email queries direct to a support team.

The Master of Technology Management (MTM) Program
The MTM program is a postgraduate management degree that focuses on the crucial role of technology and innovation to enhance business competitiveness. Two streams are available, the MTM and MTM (e-Business). The program, which commenced in 1990, is currently offered in Brisbane, Singapore, Hong Kong and now Sydney. It is offered in an innovative manner combining quality web-based material with short, intensive lecture blocks.
