The University of Queensland's Institute for Molecular Bioscience, as ?ngstrom Art, has released some spectacular images generated as a result of its scientific research.

The first image by Dr Melissa Little, shows digitally coloured pigment cells or melanophores in the skin of tadpoles of the African Clawed Frog, Xenopus laevis.

Dr Jennifer Martin's image shows a crystal of bacterial enzyme XPRT, floating in a crystallisation droplet. This enzyme plays an important role in the synthesis of bacterial DNA.

The third image shows HeLa cells that have been labelled to highlight their Golgi (green), cytoskeleton (red) and nuclei (blue). Mr Darren Brown, Assoc. Prof. Jenny Stow from the IMB, and Dr Paul Gleeson from Monash Medical School produced this image.

These three images come from the Developmental, Structural and Cellular Biology research programs at the IMB, part of the $105 million UQ/CSIRO Joint Building Project supported by the State Government and Federation Funding, currently under construction at the University's St Lucia campus.

Funded by a Science and Technology Awareness Program grant, ?ngstrom Art is an IMB project designed to promote and encourage an interest in science through the wide distribution scientific images to the general public.

?ngstrom Art convenor Ruth Drinkwater said that although all these images are from IMB research, ?ngstrom Art is keen to publish images from other areas of science.

"We have had several expressions of interest from other institutions and departments in the University" she said.
