The University of Queensland will host a series of special events in the lead-up to the official opening of the award-winning UQ Ipswich campus on June 22 by the Premier of Queensland, Peter Beattie.

The UQ Senate will meet for the first time at the Ipswich campus on Thursday, June 3. The meeting will give Senate members an opportunity to inspect the new campus.

On June 7, Vice-Chancellor Professor John Hay will host His Excellency Major Peter Arnison, AO, Governor of Queensland, on a tour of the Ipswich campus.

In the week preceding the official opening, Ipswich and West Moreton school-leavers will have an opportunity to visit UQ Ipswich.

The tours will give students access to senior academic staff from the University who can provide an outline of the courses and careers available through UQ Ipswich.

Students will have an opportunity to test drive state-of-the-art technology that has been installed at the new Ipswich campus, including the Internet.

The University is also holding the inaugural UQ Ipswich Golf Day on Friday 18 June for corporate supporters, community leaders and Friends of UQ Ipswich. The event will be held at the Sandy Gallop Golf Course which is adjacent to the UQ Ipswich campus.

Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor Trevor Grigg, said the official opening of UQ Ipswich would be a major milestone for the Ipswich campus. Since opening its doors in February this year UQ has welcomed 520 students to Ipswich.

"UQ Ipswich is a spacious and historic campus, boasting some of the most modern teaching facilities in the world," Professor Grigg said.

"The new cutting-edge courses and hi-tech facilities at the UQ Ipswich campus have generated substantial interest among school-leavers and mature age students from Ipswich and West Moreton, Queensland, interstate and overseas."
