Coronation Drive Bus Lane Project begins
The Brisbane City Council has finalised the detailed design of the proposed Coronation Drive Bus Lane between High Street, Toowong, and Chasely Street, Milton.
University of Queensland Secretary and Registrar Douglas Porter said construction of the bus lane would commence on the High Street to Booth Street section of the bus lane in April.
The first stage of the project to Chasely Street is expected to be completed by December 1999.
Mr Porter said pedestrian and user safety was a top priority and appropriate signage would provide advice on any changes to the road and pedestrian network.
The following changes will apply according to Brisbane City Council's Community Consultation Manager Sharon Hollamby:
* the shared pedestrian and cyclist lane between Archer Street and Glen Road will be closed to cyclists from March 30 - June 1999;
* signage, offset from the path, will identify the detour (on the inbound site) and a barricade will prevent cyclists from continuing;
* bicycles will be allowed in the bus lane, which is 3.7 metres wide;
* the bus lane will be dedicated for directional peak flows, but the exact change-over times are yet to be finalised
* the pedestrian pathway will remain intact - only cyclists will be detoured through Archer Street and Glen Road due to safety issues;
* if cyclists wish to turn right into High Street, they may dismount and walk up the pedestrian path or continue down Glen Road and cross over Benson Street;
* a sign will be placed on the outbound side near Glen Road.
