UQ’s Centre for Native Floriculture (CNF) has released their latest learning tool to help new growers develop a better understanding of the industry.

Smart Marketing, a scenario-based learning program, allows current and potential growers to work their way through the various issues involved in marketing native flowers. There are also quizzes and tasks available to allow students to test their knowledge of the field.

The program, which is available on both CD-ROM and online, describes the various domestic and international markets where Australian native flowers are sold.

Growers are also able to use the resource to better understand how to develop a marketing plan for their own business and peruse relevant web links and reference lists.

President of the Australian Rainforest Conservation Society and UQ Adjunct Professor Dr Aila Keto commended CNF on producing such an innovative product.

“This online learning tool is great for people who want to learn more about marketing flowers but find it difficult to get to training workshops,” she said.

Smart Marketing is the third in the series of scenario-based learning programs. The first, I think I want to grow native flowers, deals with the financial implications of developing and operating a native flower plantation.

The second, Why do good flowers go bad?, illustrates how correct post-harvest handling of cut flowers assists to maintain optimum quality from farm gate to the customer.

Smart Marketing was developed by the CNF in conjunction with Prof Sherrie Lin Wei from the Department of International Business Administration, Chienkuo Technology University, Taiwan.

The CNF, based at UQ Gatton, uses innovative research to support the development of Queensland’s native floricultural industries.
