A blanket of darkness will descend on UQ for 60 minutes on March 28 as lights go out to support the global Earth Hour movement.

The carefully co-ordinated “lights out” operation, between 8:30pm and 9:30pm, will target non-essential lighting at UQ’s St Lucia, Gatton, Ipswich and Herston campuses, Indooroopilly Mine and Moreton Bay Research Station on North Stradbroke Island.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Greenfield said UQ was enthusiastic about participating in Earth Hour, a worldwide effort to reduce energy consumption.

“Last year the University achieved a 14.2 percent energy reduction during Earth Hour, with a total saving of 1.7 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2-e) emissions," Professor Greenfield said.

“UQ’s support for Earth Hour is part of a wide-ranging commitment to contribute to energy conservation and greenhouse gas mitigation.

“The event is also an opportunity to remind staff and students of actions that they can take, or continue taking, to reduce their everyday carbon footprint."

The University will again calculate the amount of energy saved during this Earth Hour.

During the event, UQ’s occupational health and safety guidelines will be observed, and emergency lighting and University security systems will operate normally.

People wishing to register to be involved in Earth Hour can find details at the website at http://www.earthhour.org/
